The Essential Stem Checklist: How to Prep Your Session for a Pro Mix

May 6, 2026 | HMG Studios technical guide

A pro mix starts with clean files

You spent weeks perfecting the production. The vibe is there, the arrangement is locked, and now the mix needs commercial polish. The cleaner your files are, the more time your engineer can spend on tone, emotion, punch, and depth.

1. Label every file clearly

Avoid names like Audio_01_v2_Final_FINAL. Use names your engineer can understand instantly.

  • Kick_In.wav
  • Lead_Vocal_Dry.wav
  • Lead_Vocal_FX.wav
  • Synth_Main_L.wav
  • BGV_High_01.wav

2. Export the right technical specs

  • Use WAV or AIFF files for final mixing.
  • Keep the sample rate native to your project, usually 48kHz or 96kHz.
  • Use 24-bit or 32-bit float whenever possible.

3. Send dry and wet versions when needed

Keep creative effects that define the sound, but remove utility reverbs, delays, or demo compressors unless they are essential. If you are not sure, send both versions.

4. Remove master bus limiting

Turn off the limiter on your master fader before export. Aim for peaks around -3dB to -6dB so the engineer has headroom to work.

5. Start every stem at Bar 1

Every file should begin at the same timestamp, even if the sound enters later in the song. This lets the engineer drag everything into the session and have it align immediately.
